Brookfields has over 150 years of local government expertise advising councils stretching the length of New Zealand. In addition we act for developers, private property owners and community groups or special interest associations in matters involving local government.

The Local Government Act 2002 sets out the purpose of local government and provides the legal authority for local authorities to act when there is no other specific legislative authority. Auckland Council has a unique structure of governance which is subject not only to the Local Government Act 2002, but also its own set of legislation. Auckland Council now manages the long term and strategic planning of the region as well as the day‑to‑day local and regulatory functions.

The Local Government Act 2002 has a community engagement focus. Brookfields has extensive expertise in managing and navigating planning, reporting and decision‑making and consultation processes under the Act.

Brookfields is also a seasoned player in local government reorganisations. It advised its affected clients during the nation-wide re-organisation in 1989, guided the Manukau City Council and its related organisations through the 2010 re‑structuring in Auckland, and it will be there to assist and advise as the possibility of other re‑organisations are raised around the country.
